The Cliff Notes:

  • We have a tendency to micromanage children but that's not really a parent’s job.
  • When we, as parents, focus on managing our own behavior rather than our children's behavior, everything changes.
  • Leaders who micromanage tend to hit a ceiling that halts further progress.
  • We tend to assign too much meaning to every little behavior of our kids.
  • Micromanaging our children interferes with their ability to grow.
  • Although it's not our job to micromanage our children, it is our job to help them manage themselves.
  • You don't have control over others. You only have control of your own response to others.
  • It's important to teach our children that they don't have to follow the beaten path to be successful.
