Episode 87 Do I need to hire an employee? Achieving Success by hiring the right person. with Nicole Wipp

Are you struggling to do it all yourself? Then it’s time to hire someone!

Top 13 ways to know its time to hire an employee:

  1. You’re turning down work.
  2. You’ve identified new sources of potential revenue streams.
  3. Your customers are complaining.
  4. The quality of your products and services is suffering.
  5. You don’t have time to do daily financials, bookkeeping, and paperwork.
  6. You need someone with a specific skill set.
  7. You can’t find any time for a break or a vacation.
  8. Your company isn’t growing.
  9. Your customers can’t reach you.
  10. You can finally afford it.
  11. You need more than one freelancer.
  12. There’s enough work to keep a new hire busy.
  13. You’re eventually planning to sell your company.

Tips to help you with the decision:

  • Know the points at which you shouldn't hire.
  • Start with a co-founder. hire when the tasks to be done will generate money.
  • Hire when the tasks to be completed fall under a particular skill set.
  • Kick the tires by hiring a contractor.
  • It’s something every business owner struggles with at first.

We think we can do it all, and we’re afraid to give up control. The truth is you need to let someone else handle things. It’s not a cost, it’s an investment. By bringing someone on at a rate that’s much lower than what your hourly rate is worth, that means you can grow the business twice as much.

One thing we worry about is not finding the right person, and having to replace them. That’s ok – but it can be avoided. When you look for an employee, you have to make sure you are clear on exactly what you want. Think about their duties, their responsibilities, and exactly what a typical workday will look like for them.

As you’re thinking about this understand that no one can do everything. Don’t hire a marketing person and expect them to balance your budget. Find someone with a specialty, and make sure they focus on that one thing. That’ll ensure your business excels in that area.

My last tip is this – don’t hire someone like you. Hire someone that is the opposite of you. They will be able to make up for your weaknesses and help to balance you out.
